Will bringing in the walls help?

The Mets are expected to make an announcement regarding changes at Citi Field.

According to David Lennon of Newsday, these changes will include shortening and bringing in the left field wall, bringing in the right-center bullpen fences, and fencing off the Mo Zone. WFAN’s Mike Francesa reported that all fences at Citi Field will be eight feet tall and that the foul poles will remain exactly where they are. However, the walls in center and by the Mo Zone will be 390 feet.

I don’t think we can blame Citi Field for the Mets’ lack of power. Looking at, say, David Wright’s home run splits from the last three seasons, his home run totals are right about even between the road and home. At first, it was a new stadium and players were getting used to it. It’s been three years (well, if you’re a rookie, you have an excuse).

I’m not saying that the Mets aren’t hitting the ball (they are), but they’ve resorted to playing small ball, hitting doubles, getting gritty. I personally like the gritty Mets better than the guys that hit home runs all the time. Evantually, it’s like, “Look at that, he hit another one.”

It’s tough to expect powerful run production from rookies like Lucas Duda, Justin Turner, etc. It shouldn’t matter how we get the run, as long as we get the run.

While I think bringing in the fences will quiet down the Mets Blogosphere, it can only do so much to help them win games.

Very true Jessica – I wrote about a month ago that it’s candy-coating a poison pill. The disparity between road HRs and home HRs is not that great, meaning they are not hitting significantly more HRs on the road either. Plus this also means the opposition will hit more HRs, which also has not been a problem. If the pitching sucks, that’s one thing. So get better pitching and players who can play to the dimensions.
